Higher Education Institutions in Romania
In Romania higher education is offered in universities, education and research institutions, institutes, university colleges, academies, and conservatories. The state higher education system in Romania has over 49 state higher education institutions with 324 faculties and other 8 private.
The higher education institutions in Romania have various faculties, departments, university colleges, divisions, and small pilot units specialised in researches and micro-production. The faculty denotes the functional basic unit of the higher education institution and is managed and controlled by departments or chairs. The department is a sub-unit administered by the University Council of a faculty.
The Romanian
higher education sector comprises of private as well as public institutions. There are 6 types of higher education institutions in Romania:
University (Universitate): Universities are the largest tertiary institution that comprise of many faculties and programmes. The Universities in Romania award advanced scientific and professional qualifications while integrating teaching and research activities.
Academy (Academie): These are the higher education institutions that train specialist in one area, such as Academy of Music, Academy of arts, Academy of business administration etc. and
Polytechnical University (Universitate Politehnică ): The polytechnical university in Romania provide practical and technical knowledge and skills. These institutions focus on technical field of study.
Institute (Institut): These types of higher education institutions award professional degrees based on the studies and work experience in limited specialisations.
University College (Colegiu Universitar): These institutions provide 2 to 3 years programmes that lead to a diploma. The qualification attained cannot be used for entry into postgraduate study. The university colleges functions in association with the universities.
Postgraduate schools: These institutions are independent from the universities and offer short-term as well as long-term courses. The short-term course leads to a diplomă de absolvire/graduation diploma, while the long-term course leads to a diplomă de licenţă/licensure diploma.
