Admission Requirements for Medical Schools in Romania

Self-financing students or pupils interested in obtaining Romanian scholarship can apply to the medical university studies- dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, in Romanian, English, or French. Self financing prospective pupils can apply as new undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate or transfer pupil. 

The medical university application requirements vary depending on the institution and programme. Application process and requisites to Romanian university studies depend also on the origin of the students-whether EU, EEA and Ch or not. 

Eligibility Criteria

Nationals of Romania or belonging to the EU (European Union) , EEA (European Economic Area)- Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, or Swiss confederation-Ch and other countries are eligible to apply for medical studies.

Admission Requirements

Applicant must hold a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited high school in your country of origin. The Romanian Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports accepts the diploma and then issues the acceptance letter to the non-EU/EEA/Ch pupils, or certificate to the EU/EEA/Ch pupils, thereby allowing them to study at the universities in Romania.

Application Procedure

Applicants must prepare an application file, which should contain all the required documents along with application form. Many of the universities need a copy of the application file processing fee, which is non-refundable and vary from university to university. Applicants must register for the medical studies either at the International Relations Offices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, or at the Romanian Embassies overseas, or at the respective university. Fill out an application form and submit it along with the documents in authenticated copy, authenticated translation and in original. If accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. 

Documentation

Following are the documents to be submitted:
  • High school studies certificates, such as  baccalaureate diploma or an equivalent diploma
  • Educational records: Transcripts of high school studies
  • A copy of valid passport and photographs
  • Certified copies of birth Certificate
  • Medical certificate
  • Copies of marriage certificate
  • Authentication of copies: Hague Apostille / Romanian Diplomatic Mission
The apostille is a stamp or printed form comprising 10 numbered standard fields which verifies the signature and appropriateness of the seal/stamp on the document which must be certified.

Documents issued by states that are not signatories of the Hague Apostille Convention must be certified twice: first by the ministry of foreign affairs of the issuing country and afterwards by the Romanian consulate/embassy in the respective country. 

Student from the following countries are advised to get the Hague Apostille on their copies of their study documents:

Macedonia,  Malta, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mexico, Montenegro,Panama, Portugal, St. Kitts and Nevis,  Seychelles, Surinam, Moldova, Sweden, Tonga, the U. S. A., Swaziland, and Vanuatu .

Language Requirements

Students must prove their proficiency in the language of study- Romanian; English or French

Following certificates are accepted for language proficiency:
  • English language certificate: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge
  • French language proficiency: Level B2

Also, you can prove the proficiency in the language of study in the following ways:
  • By graduating from a high school where English was the medium of instruction
  • By having the medium of instruction as official language in original country

 Transfer Medical Students

Transfer from one university to another is possible only on the basis of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. Medical university transfer in Romania takes place at the start of the academic year.
Following students can transfer to medical university in Romania:
  • Medical pupils who began their medical studies in another country and wish to carry on with their studies in Romanian medical university, without losing the ECTS credits 
  • Student who have commence their medical studies or has completed such studies and wish to begin medical university studies in Romania: those ECTS credits  that they have received in their previous studies and which are common to medical studies can be assessed

Applying Ways and Means

For most of Medical Universities in Romania, the transfer pupils are required to apply to the first year. Later, the transcripts will be evaluated by a committee comprising of university officials. The committee after assessing the transcripts decides which year the applicant will be permitted to enter. 

Following documents must be submitted:
  • Educational records: Transcripts of records with the original stamp and signature of the issuing university
  • Curriculum of the faculty/department with the original stamp and signature of the issuing university
  • Course outline or the syllabus of all the subjects undertaken with the original stamp and signature of the issuing university
  • Grading mechanism of the institution and its equivalent in the Romanian education system
  • Application evaluation fee to be paid into university bank account by bank transfer
  • Formal request of transfer (if required) 
** All documents must be translated in Romanian, English or French and must be endorsed by the university issuing them. 

Medical Post-University Specialisation / Postgraduate Medical Studies

The postgraduate medical studies in Romania takes place only in Romanian, so applicants must have knowledge of the Romanian language (level B2). 

Citizens belonging to the EU/EEA and the Swiss Confederation have to abide by the same legal requisites as Romanian citizens (Law 316/2006), and thus are required to sit for the residency exam in Romanian language.
Citizens from non-EU/EEA and the Swiss confederation must first take up a 1 year preparatory course of Romanian language and receive a Romanian language certificate. Then they can register in the self-supported fee-based form of specialisation wherein they are required to pay the tuition fees yearly.

Documentation

Following documents are required in order to apply for postgraduate medical study in Romania:
  • Copy of high school diploma or equivalent, and bachelor degree 
  • Copy of transcript of records for earlier finished studies 
  • A copy of birth certificate
  • A copy of passport and six photos
  • A copy of medical certificate
  • Curriculum Vitae
** All mentioned above documents must be translated in Romanian, English or French.
